OBČUTEK, KI POTUJE Z NAMI!

THE FEELING THAT TRAVELS WITH US

Leta nazaj.

How several family trips turned into a desire to avoid a hours-long drive just to feel like you’re in Sarajevo, if only for a moment.

The journey to the Sarajevo ’84 in Ljubljana began with a trip to Sarajevo. Years ago.

Zima, Bjelašnica in sarajevske kavarne, bari in klubi, ki so pustili pečat dobrega počutja. Preprosto ni bilo potrebno ničesar drugega, nobene posebne animacije, zgolj sarajevsko pivo in sposobnost, da se sprostiš, da ujameš energijo Sarajeva in začutiš, kako mesto diha.

Winter, Bjelašnica, and Sarajevo’s cafés, bars, and clubs that left behind such a deep sense of well-being. Nothing else was needed; no special entertainment, just a Sarajevo beer and the simple ability to relax, capture the city’s energy, and feel how it breathes. You feel right at home and just want to stay. You don’t want to go anywhere else, except wandering sround Sarajevo.

NOSTALGIJA

Then came the return home and that missing feeling. Slowly, step by step, ideas began to take shape about bringing a bit of that spirit back home to Ljubljana in a bottle. But not the spirit of today’s Sarajevo, rather, the story of the Olympics. A story Sarajevo still revives today with Vučko mascots, “Sarajevo the Olympic City” mugs, and memories dusted off by street vendors, athletes in cafés, and locals in breweries. The year 1984, a socialist city hosting the capitalist Olympic Games, a place where two worlds collided. “There was no tech, but there was soul.”

PIVO IN ŽAR

Driven by the soul present at the 14th Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, the decision was made that this era had to be brought back home. First and foremost, the search began with a venue with character that would draw people in – a place where any sports enthusiast, nostalgic soul, or Yugo-rocker would feel right at home. It soon became clear that this space would be anchored by čevapčiči. Because no food is ever quite as good as a good mood, seasoned with authentic čevapčiči, rich kajmak, and a cold Sarajevo beer. And just like that, the story was complete.

Tiste dobre, nostalgične Jugoslavije brez nacionalizma, brez velikih zgodb. Razen tiste velike zgodbe o zaprašeni nostalgiji po fičotih, Zastavi, starih filmih, reklamah, denarju in seveda glasbi bivše juge.

The hunt for a suitable location paid off when a basement space in Ljubljana. The story finally had a place to grow. What followed was a search for photographs and artifacts to capture the spirit of Yugoslavia and Sarajevo; those good, nostalgic Yugoslavia without nationalism or grand political narratives. Nothing but the great story of dusty nostalgia for Fićos, Zastava cars, old movies, vintage ads, old currency, and, of course, the music of former YU.

We searched for objects in attics and flea markets, and ultimately headed off to Sarajevo, where we – loyal followers of the concept’s creator – instantly understood why anyone would want a piece of Baščaršija in Ljubljana. In Sarajevo, we dug through the archives of the Oslobođenje newspaper, who let us copy articles covering February ’84. Back home, we digged out old issues of Delo, while copies of Sportske Novosti were simply lying around at the flea market.

We wove this printed Olympic history, as captured by the newspapers, straight into the venue, giving a special place of honor to Jure Franko and his iconic silver medal. The whole Yugoslavia had been waiting for it, and Franko delivered. True to those memories, Jure himself dropped by, strolled through his own past, signed a few photos, and decided he knew exactly where to go in Ljubljana for a good plate of čevapi.

Slowly, the pieces of the mosaic began falling into place. The opening day arrived, followed by the evening, the night, and a party that lasted until morning, along with that unmistakable feeling of being on top of the world, completely carefree and right in Sarajevo. And that is precisely what the visionary behind the project had hoped for, what all of us ultimately wished to achieve, and what we still experience to this day.
